#GrowwithGIPSIL: Apprenticeships with GIPSIL (Part 2)

For Part 2 of our #GrowwithGIPSIL series – where we look at what it is like to be an apprentice with GIPSIL

We spoke to GIPSIL’s current Project Management Apprentice, Conner Cadden. This isn’t Conner’s first apprenticeship, as prior to working at GIPSIL, he completed a business administration apprenticeship in a different organisation. Missed Part 1? Find it here.

Q: What made you want to do the apprenticeship with GIPSIL?

A: I liked the fact that GIPSIL help those from disadvantaged backgrounds and improve the lives of young adults, families and people in Leeds. Also, I thought there would be a lot of different types of projects for me to get involved in.

Q: I know you’ve done apprenticeships in the past too. What is your favourite thing about learning through an apprenticeship?

A: Rather than being given lots of theory work, I prefer to get stuck in and be taught the job. Apprenticeships are a great way for me to put the theory in to practice and understand what I have been taught.

Q: Do you think more people should be encouraged to do apprenticeships and why?

A: I think apprenticeships are a great way to reach your career goals whilst earning money, experience and expertise. For me it was a no brainer as there are a lot more opportunities thrown your way. If you work hard and show that you are keen to develop and grow, you will reach your career goals in any organisation that decides to take you on as an apprentice.

Q: How did the previous apprenticeship positions you’ve held helped you get in the role you’re doing at the moment?

A: I previously worked as a business administrator and gained both my Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ qualifications and I am now working towards my Level 4 associate project manager qualification. The qualifications I worked on before were like stepping stones to progress higher in the career path I want to work in. Plus, they also gave me the skills, experience and expertise to feel comfortable to work towards a higher qualification.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who has just started an apprenticeship position?

A: Work hard and take every opportunity you get given because it will pay off massively when you begin to see yourself progress in to your chosen career.
